Ok, so I knew it was going too easy... My lettuce and broccoli looked fantastic... standing upright, great color, healthy looking... My first onion had popped through the soil already... Then I check the weather and BLAM, there it is.. A hard freeze coming Tuesday morning... I know they are hardy crops, but even with covering them I'm afraid I wasted money planting so early...
What do you cover your crops with this time of year??

The Foodie Nurse Has Arrived
Welcome to The Foodie Nurse!!! A friendly relaxed blog where I'll be documenting my successes and failures as it comes to home gardening... I welcome you all here, pour a glass of Pinot and enjoy the ride.
A few months ago I decided that this would be the year I would start my home garden. I bought the house my grandparents built six years ago, and after a few years of getting everything in order here I am. My grandfather loved to garden, and hopefully I can work the land as well as he did. I'm married to the most wonderful woman in the world, and have 2 perfect children. They deserve homegrown food and I am going to do my best to give it to them!!!
A little about my garden. I am starting out as small as I can (I think and do way too big way too soon). I build a 4x8 cedar box, which I already filled with some early spring plants.
Here is a shot of the garden:
I've really been researching the square foot gardening method and figured this early spring crop would be a good place to try it out... From left to right I have planted rows of the following: snap peas (seed), broccoli, lettuce (mixed mescalin, romaine, butter crunch), onions, and carrots. With the temp's up in the 70s last week I kept my bed uncovered, but with temp's heading into the 30s this week I'll keep my row covers on during the cold spell.
I have also planted 5 dwarf apple and 1 dwarf peach tree on my side yard. The taller two, which are dwarf Cortland and Honeycrisp should fruit a little this year, and the smaller 3 (Pixie Crunch, Liberty, and Goldrush) are really just sticks on posts right now.
I also have coming a 3 tier strawberry pyramid bed from Gurney's that should be installed in a month or so with 50 strawberry plants in it.
I am very excited about this bed and also bought the support and netting to keep the birds away.
Overall I think it's a great start. I am researching mulches tonight and will likely add a post about them tomorrow... Leave a comment below, let me know what your garden plans are this year!!!
